| Way-Har Farms
- the actual farm is nestled in the valley directly behind the dairy store,
along Lesher Road in Upper Tulpehocken Township.
Although you cannot see the farm from Route 183, we do farm land along
Route 183 and Henne Road.
|
|
 |
The Farm:
Purchased by the Lesher Family in 1952, this 200-acre parcel is full of slopes
and hills. In addition to the
home farm we farm additional rented ground so that we can grow all the feeds
and forages that we need for our cattle.

See
the Pastures:
As you travel along Lesher Road you will see the fields divided into
paddocks.
We rotational graze the entire herd.
This means that the animals are housed in the fields and paddocks not
in the barns. The young
stock is kept in the paddocks all year except for the worst months
of ice and snow. The bred
heifers and dry cows are kept |
| outdoors year-round.
The milking herd goes out every day, except for the extreme
cold and ice. While in
the pastures they consume a mixture of native grasses, the main
source of nutrition for the milking herd.
|
The Cows:
We
have a milking herd that consists of Holsteins, Jerseys, Brown Swiss, Milking
Shorthorns and Ayrshires. This
mixed herd allows us a higher butterfat content, and a more palatable milk
product.
